GRAD U 8 -- Scrapbook Pages

Do you find yourself driving down the road and trying to make sense of some of the license plates? UR2CLOSE -- that's obvious! BRUSH'EM -- a Dentist around town had that one!

I don't really text. I guess I would rather talk to someone, and I get rather frustrated to type out all those words ... I suppose you are supposed to write something like this: I GRAD U 8'd!

Having fun with the license plates & texting idea -- and mixing in a little bit of a Scrabble board, these 2 pages were born.

This child is SO NOT Girly, but I just had to use some girly & feminine papers and embellishments. Especially when they are from one of my favorite brands of paper: IMAGINISCE. For these 8x8 pages, we used the papers from the FOR PEEP'S SAKE collection. The papers are soft & subtle, feminine, and have GLITTER printed into the designs. The "glistening" you see in the photos is the glitter in the paper.

I know the paper collection is called "For Peep's Sake" -- and you are just thinking chicks & bunnies. One of the designs (reverse of the stripe) has a small overall pattern including chicks, bunnies, and other spring things. BUT, most of the papers are more generic than the name of the collection would suggest. Don't judge a paper collection by it's name!

Another wonderful thing about these papers is that they are DOUBLE-SIDED. The papers are nice and sturdy and could be used for any project.

The DRAPIN' DAISIES paper was used along the bottom of each page, while the reverse side of COLOR ME HAPPY was used (stripes). There is also some of the reverse of Drapin' Daisies as photo mat and punched label for the date.

Scraps of papers were used to punch tag shapes, a few small pieces of Magic Mesh were added, scraps of ribbons added here & there, flowers and of course, BLING.

I layered the flowers. Some are Bazzill, some are Prima, some are paper, some are silk. Just mix and match.

Color was the main way we chose the flowers, then we looked at the textures. This is a departure from my normal pages where the flowers would ALL be same, perhaps different sizes. But no garden has all the same flowers, right?

A close-up of the top right of this page shows the detail (explained below).

The Rhinestone BLING was used in several ways.

For the center of flowers, various sizes were chosen. The same color was used for the centers to tie all the various flowers together.

The smallest rhinestones in the set (Doodlebug Design) were used to make a circle around my DD receiving her diploma. Yea, you can hardly see her. At least with the rhinestones, your eye is drawn to that part of a very busy photo!

A close-up of the title reveals it's meaning: Graduate, You Are Great! You have to read it like a Scrabble board. The letters in the title are from various alphabets -- again, mixing & matching shapes & colors.

A Gel pen was used to make the square shape around each letter. WE LOVE the gel pens. Some fun ideas on how to use the gel pens coming (along with the clear button ideas).

Cosmo Cricket LACING CARD Mini Book

My DD and I spent a nice long weekend at her college orientation. At night, I had a dorm room all to myself, and I took this opportunity to work on a mini book / home decor project.

Using a set of Cosmo Cricket Lacing Cards, I first covered the front & backs of all the 5x7 size chipboard pieces with the printed paper. I chose a background paper with swirls (Holiday Scroll Red paper), no need to worry -- there is no upside down, no sideways -- you can change your mind about the layout! Love these papers in the CHRISTMAS Collection from Flair Design.

QUICK TIP:

Do you want to make covering the chipboard quicker and easier?

* Cut the papers slightly LARGER than the chipboard base.

* Use glue stick or liquid white glue -- these types of adhesives give you some time to move the paper around to ensure no bubbles or wrinkles.

* * *

Lacing cards have holes down both sides -- to bind the cards together. Punch holes as you cover each side. For example, if you cover both sides BEFORE punching holes on one side, you won't be able to find the holes easily.

The next step would be to use ink or paints to cover the "naked" chipboard edges. Other possibilities include using embossing ink and embossing powder along all the edges!

The chipboard cards are sturdy enough to use the holes without reinforcements. But, eyelets add a more finished look, are inexpensive and quick.

A Crop-A-Dile makes setting the eyelets unbelievably quick and quiet. We LOVE our CAD!

After the PREPARATION of the lacing card base, the fun and really creative part begins.

Choose theme, photos, embellishments, inks, stamps & more.

QUICK TIP:

The background paper used here doesn't scream "Christmas" holiday. What to do if you've adhered the background paper and want to change your project plans? You CAN change your mind! When choosing background papers think of using more generic & overall prints! Many types of photos would look good on this background paper.

THE COMPLETED PROJECT -- four decorated pages in one night!

Some might refer to this as a "mini-book", it is being used as a home decor accent. More than just a frame with a photo, this mini-book project sparks conversation!

Due to the small size of each page (5x7), this project takes a small amount of paper & embellishments. You can use scraps (we did!). And more importantly, it can be completed in an evening -- and is portable!

The photos are cut down to approximately 3' x 5". Before adhering the photo to the chipboard card, we added some scraps of coordinating papers. On top of the papers, some gold magic mesh, and THEN the photo. Cut some self-adhesive felt fusion into small pieces, add brads to the center of some flowers, ribbons, buttons and a journaling card -- and it's on to the next page.

Keeping embellishments similar on each page gives a sense of "flow" when you open the set of lacing cards.

The cards are laced together with a hemp twine that is colored red. You can either buy it red, OR dye your own with some inks. If the book will be filled with a lot of 3-D embellishments, lace the pages together loosely.

Are there rules to follow? Balance? Rule of thirds? On scrapbook pages, we pay more attention to "design" elements like those -- but it was just having fun adding embellishments on each page!

* * *

JUST HAVE FUN -- No Rules!

This particular set of photos captured my DD opening her one "big" gift this year. Something she really wanted, but didn't ask for because she thought it was way too expensive. It was truly a surprise!

Holiday_lacing_card_book_pg3

Hugging a UPS Express box? What kind of present is that? She had peeked into the box, and knew what was inside, but the gift was so tightly packed she couldn't get it out easily. Then she started laughing. Everyone was laughing ...

Again there are scraps of Flair "Christmas" collection papers, magic mesh, flowers, ribbons, buttons & more small pieces of Queen & Company's FELT FUSION.

Cutting the felt into small pieces maximizes your embellishments.

The flower on the bottom right nestles on top of a piece of green ribbon. A small 3 inch scrap of ribbon -- perhaps destined for the trash can!

Small scraps of ribbon are kept in a jar for just this kind of project. Do you cut pieces of ribbon off a roll so that you can bring to a crop? Don't worry about wasting the ribbons ... just stash the scraps and use for another project.

Holiday_lacing_card_book_pg4 * * *

The fourth page of this mini-book. Notice the eyelets on the right side of this page? Run some ribbon or wire, add beads & more. So many possibilities!

* * *

The "cover" page for this is just a quick and simple layout. We ALMOST forgot to add some BLING to this project. That can't happen, so some Me & My Big Ideas "Holly" RHINESTONES are added to top & bottom corners.

Think this project is complete? There are four MORE pages on the reverse side!

* * *

Don't forget : Four more pages for lots more fun & creativity on the back!

Holiday_lacing_card_book_pg1

* * *

The "title" or cover page. Designed so a photo could later be placed on top of the "Noel - Happy Holidays" piece.

* * *

There is also a square button with a printed design. Just where did we find that?

Check tomorrow's post and find out -- you can make your own!

OH So glad Orientation is Over!!

Just spend 4 days away from home. One day/night I stopped to visit my parents, and three days we were at the college that my DD will be attending in the fall. The students stayed with roommates in the dorms -- so they could get that dorm experience. Parents had the option of staying in the dorms too. I decided I'd like to stay on campus and see what it was like (again). Parents got lucky ... we had an air-conditioned dorm. And didn't have to share a room. But the twin bed was mildly uncomfortable, hall was noisy and I had to share a bathroom with the dorm room next door. Not a whole lot different than home!

We were SO busy for the 2 days of Orientation. The school fed us well though! Everwhere we went there was drinks, fruit, ice cream, snacks ... and lunch and dinner were wonderful (the first day). The second day we ate in the cafeteria with all the students. Cafeteria food ... is cafeteria food. But it was free ... not really free, it was part of the orientation cost.

Thankfully the weather was nice. It was warm, but there was a nice breeze. In the afternoons it did get pretty warm, and we started to drag by 4pm. We were going from 7am - 9:30 (and the kids stayed up till midnight). They didn't want us to sleep much.

As we were checking out of the dorms & going to breakfast on the second day, I hit a curb as I rounded a corner (they have VERY narrow roads, and I mean that as a real understatement) ... and my tire received a 2 inch gash in the side. I knew it was gone when I literally heard "SSS  SSS SSSS". Pull over into the parking lot, change the flat tire. No big deal. I have changed more flat tires ... it's really old hat now.

Now I only have a small spare tire and we were almost 300 miles from home -- that was an issue. And we were in a very rural location -- no tires to fit my car. It wasn't an issue of needing the GoodYear Eagles that are currently on there, I mean NO TIRES to fit the car. Don't know where they got the tire, they ordered it from somewhere ... it arrived just before they close at 5pm. It was at a small local gas / service station. You know, the kind that used to be everywhere ... 2 garages with lifts and a TINY office to pay. The gas pumps still have the numbers that go around and around -- not electronic kind. And no "pay at the pump with credit card". And yes, they CLOSE at 5pm, gas pumps too!

The mechanic and other men at the gas station were WONDERFUL. Very helpful and understanding. I just couldn't thank them enough. They packed my tiny spare back into the trunk all nice and neat. They wrote me a receipt for the tire from a small receipt book. I guess you still get that in small town America. Makes me want to pack up my stuff and move there, seriously.

We have almost 2 months until the move-in day ... we're hosting a "Crop Till You Drop" tomorrow. Am I a glutton for punishment or what? Will post some pictures of our projects soon!
